Stop Motion Storytellers
Target Grades: Grade 1 to Grade 6
Where literacy meets modern technology! In this high-energy workshop, students work in small production teams to become authors and directors. Teams map out an original narrative outline, construct their characters and scene backgrounds using Lego, and use a dedicated stop-motion app on iPads to film their movies frame-by-frame. The workshop culminates in a mini "Classroom Film Festival" where students present their creations to their peers. A great lesson in using technology as a tool to create... not just as something to watch for entertainment. Here... the students are the media creators!
Watch them engage, watch them create, watch their confidence grow... right in front of your eyes!
Curriculum Alignment: Interdisciplinary powerhouse! This program merges English Language Arts & Literature: Narrative Structures, Storyboarding, Character Development, and Oral Communication; with Fine Arts (Art): Sculpting, Visual Composition, Visual texture, Media Arts and Science: Technological Applications.
*This program is an effective way to get reluctant writers engaged! Building with Lego and filming it on an iPad makes story-writing instantly appealing to those students*
What You Need To Know
What To Expect
The EDTECH Creative Facilitator will come to your classroom and lead a 2 hour Stop Motion session. The Facilitator will arrive at least 20 minuets prior to the program start time to get set up. Students will work in groups to write a story, build their stories characters and accessories with Lego, and create a Stop Motion Movie with iPads. Upon completion of the making of the movies, we'll have a showing of each groups movie with the class.
The Facilitator will provide the Lego. Volunteers are not required for this in-class field trip. However, parents are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Getting Prepared
Divide the class into 5 groups.
A smart board or projector is required so that audio and visual materials can be presented to the students. The EDTECH Creative Facilitator can provide a laptop to hook up to your smart board or projector if required. 5 iPads (1 per group) is required with Stop Motion Studio downloaded on them. Please be sure desks are cleared off and each student has a sharpened pencil for the writing portion. Please prepare students by reviewing behaviour expectations amongst their peers, the EDTECH Creative Facilitator and any attending parents. .
In Conclusion
At the end of the program, the EDTECH Creative Facilitator will review the collaborative writing and creative process, as well as the Stop Motion technology used to make their movies. The children will be encouraged to participate in the review as this is another way to reinforce their learning. Each student will be given a participation gift to take home with them. The gift will be a mini set of Lego or other building materials that can be used in the making of more Stop Motion Creations. The Facilitator will confirm the number of students who participated and have the teacher sign a log form. An invoice will be sent via email reflecting the number of participating students. A feedback form will be sent via email so assessments of the program and the facilitation can be made.
