Coding With Botley

Target Grades: Grade 1 to Grade 6 (Challenges scale dynamically from beginner to advanced)

Program Description: Coding with Botley introduces students to the fundamentals of coding without adding to their daily screen time! Whether you're a beginner on an experienced coder, this program is accessible and fun for all!

Utilizing screen-free coding robots, students work in collaborative teams, using their critical and computational thinking skills to program Botley to solve mazes, navigate dynamic obstacle courses and complete tasks.

Students learn to write code sequences, test logic, and actively "debug" their errors when plans change. This workshop perfectly fulfills Alberta’s mandatory Computer Science outcomes in a highly engaging, screen-free format.

Curriculum Alignment: Hits the Science (Computer Science strand) out of the park: Computational Thinking, Coding Concepts (Instructions, Sequencing, Debugging, and Looping). Mathematics: Spatial Awareness, Geometry, and Logical Reasoning.

What You Need To Know

What To Expect

The EDTECH Creative Facilitator will come to your classroom and lead a 2 hour coding session. The Facilitator will arrive at least 20 minuets prior to the program start time to get set up and prepare the volunteers for their assigned station. There are 5 stations, each with their own Botley. Each station is to be run by a parent volunteer. Each station has it's own theme and various challenges to complete. Students will take turns coding Botley to complete these challenges. Students will rotate through each station to complete challenges and create their own challenges.

Getting Prepared

Divide the class into 5 groups.

5 parent volunteers are required to run the stations.

A smart board or projector is required so that audio and visual materials can be presented to the students. The EDTECH Creative Facilitator can provide a laptop to hook up to your smart board or projector if required.  Botley is best used on the ground. So having floor space available is preferred. A smooth floor is best... but Botley will work on carpet as long as it isn't too thick. Please prepare students by reviewing behaviour expectations amongst their peers, the EDTECH Creative Facilitator and Parent Volunteers.

 In Conclusion

At the end of the program, the EDTECH Creative Facilitator will review the challenges completed and how students used their computational thinking. The children will be encouraged to participate in the review as this is another way to reinforce their learning. Each student will be given a participation gift to take home with them. This will be an item such as a game, puzzle or toy that will challenge the students computational thinking. The Facilitator will confirm the number of students who participated and have the teacher sign a log form. An invoice will be sent via email reflecting the number of participating students. A feedback form will be sent via email so assessments of the program and the facilitation can be made.
